The first casualty at Fairlop was a civilian carpenter. Ernest Ashmole of Thorold Road, Ilford ,who sustained serious injuries when a wooden hanger he was assisting to erect, collapsed. Buried at St Marys Church, Ilford, his inscription reads:
'Civilian Ernest Ashmole 16th August 1916, aged 43. His death was the result of an accident at Fairlop Aerodrome on 19 July 1916.'
