28 January to 14 February 1942. Hornchurch aerodrome waterlogged due to extreme weather conditions, so squadrons 64, 81 and 411 stationed at Fairlop.

Whilst at Fairlop the Squadrons were scrambled to seek out German battleships Gneisenau and Scharnhorst trying to escape to the Atlantic via the English Channel. Atrocious conditions, which prevailed in the channel, permitted the battleships to avoid detection.

April 1942. 313 Squadron, engaged mainly on combined Bomber /Fighter operations in France.

June 1942. 122 Squadron( Bombay ) led by Squadron leader Leon Prevot. In July he was shot down over France and escaped back to England via Spain. On the same sortie 122 squadron lost 4 pilots.

122 Squadron was then commanded by Squadron leader Donald Kingabey DFM.

Winter 1942/1943. 64 Squadron, who had seen Front line service in France during 1915. Many of the squadron operations were acting as escorts to the 8th army Air Force.
